Poets Eleanor Rees (Andraste’s Hair) and Melanie Challenger (Galatea) have both been nominated for this year’s Forward Prize for Best First Collection, confirming the fast-growing reputation of Salt Publishing. Like Eleanor, Chris McCabe is a Salt poet and a Liverpudlian. His collection The Hutton Inquiry is a powerful examination of language under pressure. Musical refreshment is provided by Songdog, led by playwright Lyndon Morgan, in another strong lineup from Salt Margins.

IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM

Friday 21st September

Reading to mark United Nations International Day of Peace on 21st September. This includes the premiere of British Composer Award-winner, Tarik O’Regan’s extraordinary oratorio for mixed choirs, string quintet and harp, taken from the texts gathered by Melanie Challenger and Zlata Filipovic in ‘Stolen Voices’ to acknowledge a century of violence and violent nationalism. It’s a low-key, celebrity-free event aimed mostly at young people but the oratorio, which will be performed by Choir of London at 11am and 3pm in the museum’s atrium, is complex and utterly superb. Not to be missed.

DEPARTURE TO ANTARCTICA
Melanie heads to Antarctica to take up her Artist in Residence post on October 17th 2007.
