Founded by Chris Hamilton-Emery, John Kinsella and Clive Newman – who left the partnership in 2002 – Salt publishes poetry, short-story collections, literary criticism and how-to books such as Short Circuit: A Guide to the Art of the Short Story. It’s also expanding into children’s books, and longer fiction including crime and romance. I was caught up in something tricky working on a sales pitch or some typesetting and I’d answered the call when I really hadn’t wanted to, and was regretting it as I put the handset to my ear. “I’m going to die,” said the caller.
