Last week authors linked by Salt came together to read from their short stories for the Wisewords women’s arts festival in Spitalfields, an event organized by Salt author Jay Merill and one of a series of Wednesday readings for the Wisewords book club at The Luxe, running through March. Jay, whose Salt collections are Astral Bodies and God of the Pigeons, read along with three other Salt authors, Tania Hershman (The White Road and Other Stories ), Elizabeth Baines (Balancing on the Edge of the World, Too Many Magpies and The Birth Machine) and Susannah Rickards, a recent winner of the Scott Prize with Hot Kitchen Snow. They were joined by Sarah Salway and Catherine Smith, contributors to Short Circuit, a Salt Guide to the Short Story edited by Vanessa Gebbie. A lively evening with a good audience: some pretty wise words as well as great entertainment.
