The 2011 Scott Prize Winners are Announced

We are delighted to announce the winner of the 2011 Scott Prize for debut collections of short stories. This prize forms part of Salt’s commitment to the short story and to our mission to discover and nurture new talent from around the English-speaking world.

From almost 60 entries and a shortlist of 10, the winners, to be published in November to coincide with National Short Story Week, are:

A.J. Ashworth (Lancashire, UK): Somewhere Else, or Even Here
Cassandra Parkin (E. Yorks, UK): New World Fairy Tales
Jonathan Pinnock (St Albans, UK): Dot (.), Dash (-)

Jen Hamilton-Emery, Fiction editor at Salt, says: ‘It was a real pleasure judging this year’s prize. The entries were wonderfully varied and for many months I enjoyed vivid dreams based on the stories I was reading — not always pleasurable! The books I have chosen as winners are many things: imaginative and original, disturbing and delightful, and I believe will contribute to the colourful and always-surprising world of the short story.’

Many congratulations to these authors, and to all those shortlisted:

Adam Prince (Knoxville, US): The Beautiful Wishes of Ugly Men
Guy Ware (London, UK): Witness Protection
John Haggerty (CA, US): The Other Half of Graceland
Julie Mayhew (Herts, UK): A Little Death
Michael Downs (Baltimore, US): The Greatest Show
Nicole Reid (IN, US): If You Must Know
Virginia Gilbert (Dublin, Ireland): Abroad
